The Easement Monitoring Intern will work with a fellow Easement Monitoring Intern and assist and support the Easement Program Manager with TNC’s compliance monitoring program in NH by:
- Implementing TNC standard monitoring procedures on assigned Conservation Easements, Deed Restrictions, and other Less-than-Fee Legal Interests:
- Become knowledgeable about property by reviewing baseline, previous monitoring reports, files, and review with supervisor
- Coordinate with other member of Intern Team in the monitoring of a suite of 60+ Great Bay Deed Restrictions held by TNC, and participate in meeting with our partner agencies
- Coordinating with Landowner as appropriate
- Perform Monitoring site visit and capture observational notes, photographs, and GPS data
- Evaluate observed condition of property against allowed uses and restrictions of the Conservation Easements
- Use TNC’s Collector and ArcGISonline to enter monitoring information, process photographs and GPS data, and create Monitoring Report
- As need arises, scanning and archiving project and monitoring documents for addition into a central shared web access
- As need arises and time allows, assist with GIS edits of features to improve the accuracy of our site data
- As need arises and time allows, assist with preparation of baseline for new Conservation Easements or Deed Restrictions
- As time allows, visit several sites where TNC holds Third Party, Executory or Reverter protective interests to assess compliance with legal restrictions and to document findings
As time allows, and as assigned, the Easement Monitoring Intern will assist other staff in the NH Chapter with projects (such as Preserve Stewardship, Ecological Monitoring, and Ecological Restoration).
This Internship is a part-time paid internship totaling approximately 225 hours over the course of 6-13 weeks within the timeframe of Late May to early September, with flexibility to adjust to the Intern’s needs (a schedule will be determined upon hiring). The Intern will learn how a leading international non-profit conservation organization accomplishes stewardship of protective legal interests; the Intern will be a vital part of the success of these efforts in NH. S/he will also have the opportunity to interact with various TNC staff to learn about other dimensions of TNC’s work in NH and globally.

- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations for long periods of time in isolated settings, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
- Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.
- Will collaborate with an associate full-time Easement Monitoring Intern.
- High school diploma and 6 months of related experience or class work.
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Experience operating various types of equipment (e.g. GPS, Camera, Compass, Computer, Tablet).
- Must have a valid driver’s license, provide proof of insurance, and access to a reliable vehicle.
- Well-organized with excellent attention to detail, and able to make an effective work plan
- Able to independently perform monitoring site visits by: working competently and confidently outdoors, sometimes in remote locations; and using maps, compass, and GPS to orient oneself.
- Able to work productively and efficiently unsupervised and/or alone, both in the office and in the field
- Able to write clear and accurate reports of site visits
- Able to follow directions, while also being willing to problem-solve and collaborate with the Easement Program Manager for an effective outcome
- Able to use the computer to write reports, download data, and manage files and photos
- Experienced with basic GIS skills and able to edit spatial data
- Comfortable with the repetitive nature of some tasks and able to complete task with accuracy and consistency
- Able to provide one’s own transportation to travel to various properties in southern and central NH (mileage will be reimbursed)
- Able to secure their own housing within commuting distance of the Concord office
- Knowledge of NH’s geography, flora and fauna, and knowledge of land conservation work are not required, but are beneficial.
