Job Description

THE ROLE:

Reporting to the Sr. Director of Programs and working closely with FoodCorps’ Director of Philanthropic Investments, this position is responsible for directing the multi-component service of 15-20 full-time, FoodCorps AmeriCorps members in partnership with a network of community and school-based organizations dedicated to improving child health. Through effective implementation of FoodCorps’ three areas of service, the FoodCorps NC Program Director will ensure that the schools we serve will continue to make incremental progress improving their healthy school food environments, with the eventual goal of school-wide programmatic sustainability. Additionally, this position will be responsible for building relationships with business leaders, policy makers, education officials, and other grass-tops entities such as the Farm to School Coalition of NC, that shape school food environments in the state through their work and decisions.

This is a full-time position based in North Carolina, with flexibility around exact location within the state. This role will require up to 20% overnight travel within state and to national program events.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Engage with local and national stakeholders to Develop a vision and strategy for future scale and systems change for FoodCorps programming in NC in partnership with national staff and 

    • Cultivate and maintain strong, collaborative partnerships with local organizations to supervise service members

    • Identify schools and districts that are ready for new partnership with FoodCorps

    • Ensure FoodCorps’ financial health through collection of partnership fees and support of local fundraising efforts by assisting fundraising staff with grant proposal  

  • Lead, manage and oversee FoodCorps NC program

    • Partner with each service site to develop a plan for program delivery that ensures strong program quality, fidelity, and impact, including meeting with school administrators   

    • Oversee and help evaluate the implementation of program priorities, for example Hands on Learning and Cafeteria Taste Tests

    • Oversee program performance management and monitoring, including data collection, site observations and AmeriCorps compliance

    • Manage AmeriCorps member recruitment, selection, training and management 

  • Serve as key contact for FoodCorps’ partnership with AmeriCorps in North Carolina

    • Support national staff with AmeriCorps compliance reporting

    • Lead AmeriCorps site visits as requested

  • Develop and sustain professional relationships with key stakeholders across NC including: the Farm to School Coalition of NC, the Cooperative Extension Farm to School Working Group, previous site partners of FCNC, school district leaders, principals, elected officials, food service directors and companies and peer organizations

    • Identify opportunities for FoodCorps to elevate and support policy and systems change efforts related to Farm to School, school gardens, school nutrition, etc. at the state level 

    • Participate in existing working groups, collaboratives, or coalitions related to Farm to School, School Gardens, and School Nutrition where appropriate. 

  • Develop and implement high quality state trainings and events

    • Design and implement trainings for service members and site supervisors, including state orientation, site supervisor training, events to engage local FoodCorps alumni 

  • Supervise and support the FoodCorps NC Program Coordinator 

    • Ensure the program coordinator provides on-going coaching, support and performance management to service members

    • Collaborate with program coordinator on program management and administrative tasks 

    • Provide on-going coaching and professional development for the program coordinator

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Strong local knowledge of policies and networks related to farm to school, child health, health equity, food security, and other related fields, with experience working within or in partnership with local school districts preferred 

  • Demonstrated commitment to addressing race, class, gender, place and other social justice barriers

  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in non-profit management or in a related field

  • Ability to communicate programmatic vision and alignment effectively while navigating multiple education landscapes, government settings, nonprofits, etc.

  • Strong internal drive and ability to manage and deliver on projects independently

  • Entrepreneurial and comfortable with ambiguity, with a creative drive to solve problems, create clarity, and identify and fill gaps

  • Learning oriented, with a desire to seek and use feedback to shape your work

  • Effective written and verbal communicator, comfortable communicating through phone, email, and video chat functions

  • Experience working with school and school district administrators and school personnel

  • Broadly networked in the farm to school, school health and/or school garden movements

  • Ideal candidate will have experience supporting and managing AmeriCorps members and partnerships

  • Ideal candidate will have lived experience in NC
